These are amulets with standard magic formulas, especially crafted to protect nursing mothers and newborn babies, which were ( and still are) widely used in Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities. The two opening words of Psalm 121, which is inscribed in full in these amulets, have given them their Yiddish name, “shir hamalosl” or “shir ha-ma’a lot” in Hebrew ( “Song of Ascent”). They are also referred to a “kimpetbrivl” – “letter for the childbed” – and are hung over the crib or mother’s bed, or next to the door and windows of the room. OIL ON CANVAS
